In math, the students have been working on understanding the meaning of multiplication in chapter 3 of our new math series. They are grasping this concept quite well. They finished up the week with problem-solving skills. When reading word problems, I personally like to teach the Jeff West problem solving process titled "CATS."
C=Can I find the problem? This is where they underline the actual question in the story problem.
A=And all the important facts - This is where they find the numbers they will use in order to solve the problem.
T=Tell the strategy - This is where they decide which operation they want to use or whether or not they want to make pictures or use various manipulatives to visualize the problem.
S=Solve and label the problem - Just like it says.
Social studies has been a continuation of learning about pioneer life on the trail. We will be focusing on how to read timelines in the upcoming days from our social studies book. Students have been greatly enjoying this simulation on pioneers. Some have had some very unfortunate fates happen to them. Be sure to ask your child if they have been bitten by a rattlesnake, stung by a scorpion, or had their wagon washed away in a river!
