Well, after a week of finishing up a 2 week reading unit of The Cricket in Times Square, our reading is finished for the year. We have been working on finishing our biome research and creating slideshows. The class will be presenting these to other classes throughout next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Yesterday the 3rd and 4th graders were able to take a reward trip to the movies and Shawnee North Community Center for their hard work and great success on the Kansas State Assessments. The students represented Jefferson West very well. Remember that next week is the last week of school, so anyone that wants to celebrate a summer birthday is more than welcome to do so!
This will be my LAST newsletter for the school year. I want to end by saying thank you all for your generous donations, gifts, dedication, and feedback to help make this year successful. I do ask one thing from you all though. Research shows that the average student loses 3 months worth of learning over the summer if no reading or math is practiced over the summer. With new Common Core Standards being taught next year, it will be ever-important that your child continues to practice basic math facts and continues to read SOMETHING over the summer. I would love to see these students enter 4th grade next year by hitting the ground and running. I have numerous practice websites for math, along with a really cool DOGO News website for them to read high-interest news articles from.
Remember that the awards ceremony is next Friday and any parent that wants to check their child out after the ceremony is more than welcome to do so. Just check them out through the office.
Thanks again for an exciting school year. I couldn't do it without your support!
