Wow! What a great week we had! The book fair was a giant success! To the parents that helped fill my wish list for my classroom library, THANK YOU! It was very nice of you to go above and beyond my expectations with all the wonderful purchases you made!
In reading this week, we finished up Unit 1 in Reading Street focusing on money with a story titled My Rows and Piles of Coins. It was about a boy who was saving up for a bicycle so he could help his parents get goods to their open-air market. Mrs. Broxterman, our fellow 3rd grade teacher, was generous enough to share photos of Africa while she was there teaching for a semester. It was a great experience for the students to see this wonderful opportunity she had! Next week, we will begin Unit 2 with a story titled Penguin Chick. Unit 2 stories focus on the theme "Smart Solutions."
We learned about compound sentences in grammar. This is a great skill students need to move beyond the simple sentence writing that they are accustomed to doing. I tell them that it helps add more "meat and potatoes" to their writing. Next week, we will start on common and proper nouns.
In math, we've worked on properties of addition along with finding a rule for input/output tables. We will continue with addition and move to subtraction rules and strategies next week. Ten Marks math is always available for at-home reinforcement. Some of the assignments on Ten Marks are new and may need some of your help in order for them to correctly solve. If you do have your child work on this paperless activity, please at least have them work the problems out on paper, rather than in their heads. Mistakes show up on their scores, and we only want their best scores! It's not mandatory, but encouraged, provided you have a working computer with an internet connection.
We are in for some beautiful weather this next week, so get outside after school and enjoy it! The Fall is upon us! (My FAVORITE time of year, by the way!)
Have a great weekend!
