This week in math, the students have been working hard on subtraction with estimating differences. Mr. Crawford, our student-teacher, has been teaching the math series this week. The students have been having a hard time switching their thinking to subtraction after 4 weeks of addition! We are working on finding compatible numbers to help us come up with a reasonable number. Example: 322 - 278 would have compatible numbers like this: 325 - 275. This will help them come up with a reasonable answer before doing the actual subtraction. We haven't worked on regrouping and borrowing as of yet.
Reading was spent focusing on realism and fantasy. The students took a test online over If You Made a Million. I must say that they did MUCH better using their resources this week. Everyone passed the test! The extra focus has made a much better testing environment! Way to Go TEAM!
Mr. Crawford has been teaching Mini Society in social studies for our economics unit. The students have been super excited to learn about economics. We have taken a different route than that of the textbook. We have introduced the terms, but we have taken a real life approach to this topic. The students have taken part in a mini society. They have named the society Mayerville. As you probably know, they have all been given important jobs and everyone relies upon another to have a successful town. They have certainly gotten a glimpse of real life and what happens when you spend all the money in your budget. I was very impressed to see the students selling and interacting on market day. It definitely has been a positive experience for both the students and me.
