Well, believe it or not, we have finished the halfway point of the first quarter! Progress reports are being sent home today. These are not the final grade card, just an update that you will also find on PowerSchool. Please be sure to check these over, sign them, and return the bottom portion with your child to school. This verifies that you've actually checked it over and your child has shared the information with you.
This week has been rather hectic for some of the students. Not by design, but rather by student choice. I've been noticing some students not finishing their assignments in a timely fashion or bringing unfinished work home and not bringing it back finished. I've even noticed assignments being "lost" to only be recopied by me to be assigned again. This obviously creates a snowball effect. We ended up with a rather large snowball by Thursday this week. Thankfully, we are all caught up and ready to start a new unit in our Reading Street books on Monday.
In math, the students have finished up a chapter review for chapter 1. This chapter has been focusing on addition and subtraction strategies including rounding and regrouping/borrowing. A test will be given next Tuesday on these chapter 1 skills. I'm sure the students will be ready for it!
In reading this week, we finished up Unit 1. We will be moving to Unit 2 on Monday. Unit 2 focuses on problems and how they are creatively solved. The first story is how Emperor penguins adapt to their environments in order to survive. We will spend 2 weeks on this specific story, as the next week will be spent doing research on various penguin species.
Social Studies has been rolling along with economics. We finished up the week with an open-book test over the vocabulary involving economics. Results were not finalized for the progress reports, but will be ready to go next week.
