It's nice to have a 5-day week to really get the ball rolling! It looks like the kiddos have another 3 day weekend though. We teachers get to go to a county-wide inservice at JCN on Monday. I enjoy this inservice because we get quality collaboration with other teachers in Jefferson County to see what kinds of ideas we can use and share. Lots of goodies for sure!
This week in math, we have continued in chapter 7 with more division facts and strategies. The students have been using the strategies if need be. Some have their basic facts mastered so well that they are able to complete the daily assignment in a jiffy! One detail that many forget to do is show their work and label their answers on story problems. Common Core standards really push explaining or showing their thinking. Many want to just find a means to an end and want to just write the answer. Getting the correct answer is great (and this isn't the problem, really), but they are forgetting this detail in their problem-solving. They miss some credit when they don't show their work. Next week, we will continue with chapter 7 with multi-step problem solving and order of operations. A chapter review and test will be scheduled for next week as well. I'm sure students will do just fine on this if they do as well has they have overall on their daily assignments.
Reading the past two weeks has been focusing on biographies. We read about Gertrude Ederly, the first woman to swim the English Channel. We have an online web app called "Cube Creator" that is a fun way to have students show what they remember about a story. We created a bio-cube this week, printed it off, and they cut out and glued the cube together. Hopefully your child shared this with you. Neat activity for sure!
With the theme of Heroes, we have continued in social studies with national holidays and American heroes. Our blog topic that tied into this is was "What is a hero? Who is/are your hero(es) and why? Check your child's blog and make a comment! I am rather behind on the comment approvals, so hang tight and the comments should be posted on your child's blog soon! I have lots to go through!
Get outside this weekend, wash up the vehicles if you need to, and enjoy the weather! KU basketball is on a roll lately, so with that, I will say "Rock Chalk!"
Have a great weekend and thanks for all you do,
